Established suburbs get a lot of free help. A forty year old gum on the western boundary in Beaconsfield shades an entire wall from two o'clock onwards. Clyde North has none of that yet. The blocks are flat, the street trees are stakes and ties, and the fences are close enough that the house next door reflects light rather than blocking it. When Melbourne runs above 35 degrees, a west facing family room here is a genuinely different environment from the same room in Berwick.
The result is threefold. Direct glare that makes a screen unusable from about two in the afternoon. Radiant heat load through large stacker doors that the air conditioner then has to fight. And UV fade, which quietly ruins a light coloured lounge, a rug or a timber floor over a couple of summers. Window furnishings here are not decorating. They are the main control you have over how the house feels.

A single blind cannot solve a Clyde North living room, because the room needs two different things at two different times of day. So we fit two blinds on one bracket. The sunscreen roller sits down through the day at a 3 or 5 percent openness factor: it cuts the glare and most of the UV while you can still see the yard and the kids on the trampoline. When the sun drops to eye level, or the room needs to be dark, the blockout roller comes down over the top. Choose a blockout with a reflective or pale backing and you push a measurable amount of heat back out through the glass rather than absorbing it into the room.
Elsewhere in the house the answers are simpler. Bedrooms get blockout rollers or romans, cordless as standard. Wet areas get PVC shutters or a plain light filtering roller. Front facade rooms are where shutters earn their place, both for the insulating value and because on a street of near identical facades they are the upgrade that reads from the footpath. Clyde North has one of the youngest demographics in Melbourne, and a very large share of our jobs here involve a cot in at least one room. Corded internal blinds fall under a mandatory ACCC consumer product safety standard covering how cords must be secured and kept out of reach, and every corded blind we install complies with it. But compliance and safety are not quite the same thing in a house with a climbing toddler. Removing the cord entirely is the cleaner outcome, so we specify cordless operation as the default in nurseries, bedrooms and playrooms, and motorisation where a window is wide, tall or awkward.

How to cover a whole house without covering it all at once.
Most Clyde North buyers have just settled, and the deposit, stamp duty, landscaping and fencing have already happened. Covering every window on day one is not always realistic, so we quote per window and expect people to stage it. A sensible order:
- Stage one: bedrooms so everyone sleeps, plus the west facing living windows. Usually 1,500 to 3,000 dollars.
- Stage two: the rest of the living zone, kitchen and study, taking the whole home fit out to roughly 3,500 to 7,000 dollars for quality rollers.
- Stage three: shutters to the front facade, and outdoor blinds to make the alfresco usable year round at 450 to 1,600 dollars per drop.
For reference, premium rollers are 150 to 360 dollars per window, romans 220 to 480 dollars, PVC shutters 280 to 450 dollars per square metre and timber 380 to 650 dollars per square metre.
