Quote comparison checklist

Compare motorised blind quotes by motor, power, fabric and exclusions before price.

A fair motorised blind quote in Pakenham should list every blind, fabric, motor type, control, GST, install, warranty and any electrical work. Most 6 blind packages land from $2,700 to $6,500 in 2026. If the quote hides the motor brand, power type or exclusions, the cheapest number is not comparable.

Tick each item only when the written quote answers it clearly. If 3 or more boxes are missing on a $3,000 plus package, ask for the quote to be rewritten before you compare prices.

Red flags that should make you walk away

  • A lump sum quote for $4,000 to $9,000 with no room-by-room blind list.
  • Hardwired motors included, but no electrician details or electrical certificate wording.
  • A 40 percent, 50 percent or full payment request before final measure and order paperwork.
  • Pressure to sign during the visit to keep a same-day discount.
  • No written motor warranty, battery warranty or after-install support process.

What a compliant written quote has to state

A motorised blind quote is partly a furnishing quote and partly a control-system quote. You are not just buying fabric. You are buying a blind that must lift evenly, stop in the right position, charge reliably and work with the remote or app after the installer leaves. That means the quote should be itemised enough that you can remove a bedroom, upgrade a living room to dual rollers, or choose battery over hardwired without the whole number becoming meaningless.

At minimum, the written quote should state the business name, ABN, your address, the date, the rooms measured, number of blinds, fabric type, colour, control side if relevant, tube and bracket notes for wide blinds, motor type, remote count, hub or app inclusion, GST, supply, installation, commissioning and warranty. For roller blinds, the fabric detail matters because sunscreen, light-filter and blockout solve different problems. For roman blinds, motor load and fold stack matter more because the headrail is working harder.

If there is any 240 volt work, it should not be blurred into the blind line. Hardwired motors need a licensed electrician for the electrical work, and you should expect the electrical part to be clear enough that you know who is responsible for power, switching and certification. Battery motors avoid that in most finished homes across Pakenham and Officer, which is why they are common for retrofits.

What is usually excluded and charged later

The most common exclusion is electrical work. A quote might include hardwired motors but not the cost of getting power to the window. In a finished Berwick or Beaconsfield home, a new power point or concealed run can be $250 to $650 per point depending on roof access, wall construction and where the switch lands. Ask for that number early.

Second is control hardware. A motor price may include one remote, but not a hub, not app setup, and not enough channels to group living, bedrooms and theatre separately. A hub can add $180 to $450 per home. Extra remotes can add $60 to $160 each. Those are not unfair charges if they are disclosed. They are a problem when you only find out after order.

Third is access. Many Clyde North and Officer homes have high stair voids or living room clerestory windows. High access can add $120 to $350 because it changes the install time and sometimes needs 2 people. Fourth is removal and disposal of old blinds. Some installers include it, some do not. If there are 10 old fittings coming down, put it in writing.

Deposits deserve a separate check. Victorian domestic building work has deposit limits of 10 percent under $20,000 and 5 percent at $20,000 or more. Internal blinds are usually supply-and-install furnishings, but those limits are still a fair benchmark for trust. A business asking half the money before final measure should have a very clear reason, and you are allowed to walk away.

How to check licences, registration and product claims

For battery-powered internal blinds, the main checks are ordinary consumer checks: ABN, written quote, written warranty, clear product description and a business that will come back if a motor loses limits. You do not need to demand a building registration for a simple battery roller blind fixed into an existing window reveal. That would be the wrong test.

You do need to ask sharper questions when the work includes hardwired motors, a new electrical circuit, building work around the opening, or structural changes. Electrical work must be done by a licensed electrician. Domestic building work over $10,000 can trigger builder registration issues depending on the actual scope. The Building and Plumbing Commission practitioner search is the place to verify Victorian building practitioners when the job is more than normal blinds.

There is also a child-safety overlay. Motorised blinds are usually cordless, which is one reason they suit young families. If the same quote includes manual chain blinds in bedrooms or rentals, the corded internal window covering safety rules require proper tensioning or securing so hazardous loops are not left within reach. That is not an upsell. It is part of a safe install.

Motorised blind quote FAQs

How many motorised blind quotes should I compare?
For a motorised blind job over $3,000, compare 2 or 3 written quotes before paying a deposit. A 6 blind Pakenham package can range from $2,700 to $6,500 depending on motor type, fabric, hub and access. For 1 reachable bedroom blind under $600, a second quote may cost more time than it saves.
What must a motorised blind quote state?
A useful quote states the blind count, room names, fabric type, tube size, motor type, battery or hardwired power, remote count, hub, install, GST and warranty. It should also state who does any 240 volt electrical work and whether a Certificate of Electrical Safety is supplied. If the quote just says motorised blinds for $4,800, you cannot compare it safely.
What deposit is reasonable for motorised blinds in Victoria?
For Victorian domestic building work, deposits are generally capped at 10 percent for contracts under $20,000 and 5 percent for contracts of $20,000 or more. Internal blinds are usually supply-and-install window furnishings, but those figures are still a fair benchmark. On a $5,500 motorised blind order, a $550 deposit is normal, while 50 percent before final measure should be questioned.
What exclusions become variations later?
Common variations are electrical work, extra remotes, a hub, high access, steel lintel drilling, power points, removal of old blinds and fabric upgrades after the first visit. Each can add $80 to $650 depending on the issue. A good quote lists these before order so the final bill does not move by hundreds of dollars.
How do I check registration or licences?
For normal battery motor blinds, check the business details, ABN, product warranty and written terms. If the package includes hardwired 240 volt motors, ask for the licensed electrician details and Certificate of Electrical Safety for that part of the work. If the quote becomes structural or domestic building work over $10,000, use the Building and Plumbing Commission practitioner search.
